Alan ‘Bondies’ Bonnyman has won Tour Event 3. In the final at the Chieftain Hotel in Inverness Bondies defeated Teddy Smith 6-3 to win his second tour event in a row. In addition to this Bondies has recently also won the Keith singles and the 2-day Davy Higgins Trophy in Buckie which really is quite an achievement.
Event 3 attracted a high quality entry of 26 players. With all SEPF event now being unseeded the draw threw up some excellent ties. Harbour team-mates ‘Steady’ Teddy Smith and Tony McCallion was arguably the pick of the bunch however Teddy ran out a comfortable 4-1 winner. Neill Simpson and Mark Bell were also drawn together . The Whiter stalwart Bell led the match 3-1 only to see the Ionic Icon Simpson peg him back to 3-3, however a good clearance under pressure from Bell saw him win the deciding frame and progress to the last 16. Good mates Andrew Cormie and Ben Royan also clashed in this round with Cormie winning comfortably 4-0. An all Keith clash between recent Scottish Open winner Angela Tidball and Neil Craig went to a deciding frame which was won by Angie. Buckie’s own version of the Calendar girls Laura Duncan and Caroline Duguid lost out to Stuart Grumble and Richard Mackenzie respectively . Lhanbryde youngster Josh Clark showed good progress in his game as he took a couple of frames of Raymond Mackenzie in the all Tennant Arms clash however Mackenzie eventually won by a 4-2 scoreline. There were good wins for Alan Bonnyman and George ‘Ferret’ Taylor over Euan Devine and Andy Legge. Jamie McKnockiters Chieftain Burger must have arrived just as he was breaking off in his match against Keith’s Ian Wilson as Knoxy quickly raced to a 4-0 win. The remaining players all received byes.
The last 16 kicked off with Cammy Spence recovering from being 3-1 down to defeat Ally Grant 4-3. Alan ‘Shakey’ Mair defeated last years tour champion Adam Wood 4-2 . The ‘Two Billys’ Macdonald and Duncan met in this round with the experience of Macdonald seeing him win 4-2. An exciting tie between Stuart Campbell and Alan Bonnyman saw Stuart lead 3-1 only to find Bondies in a determined mood as he won the next 3 to seal the win. A tight match between Andrew Cormie and Raymond Mackenzie went to a deciding frame with the Lhanbryde man managing to keep his bottle and produce a good clearance to seal the win. Jamie McKnockiter also had to hold his nerve as he saw Angela Tidball level their match at 3-3 after he had led 3-1, Knoxy however came out on top in the decider to send Angie out of the competition. Mark Bell and Teddy Smith won comfortably without dropping a frame against George Taylor and Richard Mackenzie.
The first quarter final saw Cammy Spence continue his good form to defeat the tremendous potting skill of Alan Mair. Bondies sent Billy Macdonald back to Keith with a 4-1 victory. Teddy Smith and Raymond Mackenzie shared the opening 4 frames of their match however Teddy took out an excellent finish to win the next and clinically broke and dished in the 6th to take the win. The final tie of the round saw Mark Bell defeat Jamie McKnockiter 4-0.
The semi’s saw Cammy Spence lose out 5-2 to a focused Alan Bonnyman , however Spence should be proud of his performance on the day which saw him gain a couple of excellent wins. Teddy Smith was never really in trouble as he recovered from losing the first frame against Mark Bell to win the next 4 in the trot, Bell won the next but it was too little too late and Teddy won the next to reach the final, however a good to see Mark reach the latter stages of the event after a tough start to this years tour.
The final was a predictably tight affair as the similar steady playing styles of Bondies and Teddy saw them share the first 6 frames, however with the confidence of his recent good form behind him Bondies found an extra gear and won the next 3 frames to seal the victory and win his second Event in a row. Very well done to Bondies and unlucky to Teddy who had played so well throughout the day.
I would like to thank the Chieftain Hotel for their kind sponsorship and for hosting our event, I am sure you will agree that it is a tremendous venue and well worth travelling to. Thank you also to Ben for doing the draw with me, Woody and inparticular Josh Clark for looking after the fixtures and running the comp whilst I was playing, and to Laura for selling the football card….apologies if I have missed anyone out. And of course thanks to you the players who travelled to Inverness and once again supported our tour.
Finally I would like to thank our entertainment for the day , the newly formed double act from Buckie ‘Double D’ aka Duncan n Duguid……Buckie’s Got Talent ! what can you say except ‘whit a pair’ Ha Ha !
Cheers
Raymond
