The first tour event of 2014 has been won in fine style by Elgin’s Donnie Matheson who defeated Keith’s own Raymond ‘Trendy’ Duguid 6-3 in the final at Pinz Bowling in Elgin.
42 players were entered into Friday night’s draw which threw up some cracking ties. With the first draw of the year being unseeded , there is always the possibility of some early ‘heavyweight’ clashes. And so it proved to be as Teddy Smith and Alan Duncan squared up in the preliminary round with Teddy running out a 4-1 winner. Susan Collins recovered from 3-2 down to record an excellent win over Ben Royan. Another notable clash was Tony McCallion against Mark Bell which ended in a 4-2 win for Tony. Burgheads ‘big hitter’ Jamie ‘Knoxy’ Mcknockiter lost out 4-2 in a close match with Raymond Mackenzie. Andrew Cormie had to dig deep to come back from 3-1 down to win 4-3 against Andy Legge. Donnie Matheson wasted little time in beating Euan Devine 4-0. Alan ‘Shakey’ Mair sent Angie Tidball back to Keith for a shift at ‘The Ploo’ with a 4-1 scoreline. There were also comprehensive wins for Martin Hawxwell, Allan ‘Bono’ Bonnyman and Kev McFarlane in this round.
The last 32 got underway with Raymond Duguid against Teddy Smith. ‘Trendy’s’ pool was as sharp as his dress sense as he raced into a 3-0 lead only to see his lead wiped out by a spirited comeback from ‘SuperTed’ to level at 3-3. However Trendy rallied and won the decider to progress. ‘The Iceman’ Kyle Laing performed well against the experience of ‘Bono’ Bonnyman but lost out on the deciding frame. Susan Collins continued to play well as she defeated Buckie’s Laura Duncan 4-2. Burghead man Richard ‘Forky’ Mackenzie and Bob Laughlan had a tight match with Forky edging it in the 7th and deciding frame. Keith’s Neil Craig raced into a 3-0 lead against Martin Hendry only to see the next 4 frames go to the man from ‘The Craig’. Raymond Mackenzie enjoyed a huge slice of luck to fluke his final yellow and gain prime position on the black in the deciding frame against Buckie player George ‘Ferret’ Taylor…a cruel way to lose what had been a tight match. Tennant Arms team-mates Stuart Campbell and Billy Macdonald met in this round with Stuart winning convincingly 4-1. The tie of the round was a repeat of last years tour 1 final between Tony McCallion and Neill Simpson. The match ended with Neill winning by an impressive 4-1 margin. Donnie Matheson beat Kev McFarlane 4-2, James Duff joked that he was pleased to have reached the last 32 however Alan ‘Bondies’ Bonnyman did not allow him to get any further with a 4-0 win. Cammy Spence, Ben Mcmoran, James Bonnyman , Adam Wood, Andrew Cormie all had comprehensive wins to progress to the next round.
The last 16 matches were in general one-side affairs. Raymond Duguid and Ben McMoran had 4-1 wins against Cammy Spence and James Bonnyman respectively. Neill Simpson beat Richard Mackenzie by the same scoreline. Andrew Cormie was impressive in a 4-1 win over last years Tour Champion Adam Wood. An equally impressive win was completed by Donnie Matheson who also sent Alan Mair packing 4-1. Alan ‘Bondies’ Bonnyman put a spanner in the works of ‘The Machine’ Stuart Campbell as he ran out a 4-2 victory. There were however two tight matches in this round. Susan Collins called on all her international experience to beat Stable bar team-mate ‘Bono’ Bonnyman 4-3. Raymond Mackenzie just edged out Martin Hendry 4-3 in a closley fought game.
The quarter finals saw Susan Collins great run come to an end in a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Raymond Duguid. Neill Simpson never allowed Ben McMoran to gain a foothold in their match as he stormed to a 4-1 win. Raymond Mackenzie must have been wearing his lucky pants as an outrageous ‘fluke’ in each of the opening two frames saw him lead 2-0 against Andrew Cormie. Some uncharacteristic mistakes from Andrew allowed Mackenzie to win the next two frames and complete a 4-0 victory which was not a fair reflection on the game. Donnie Matheson and Bondies met in the remaining quarter final. Bondies raced into a 3-1 lead however ‘Dark Horse’ Donnie showed real determination to win the next 3 and take his place in the semi-finals.
The first semi saw Raymond Duguid face Neill Simpson. After sharing the first 4 frames , Trendy managed to take the next couple to lead 4-2. Neill responded by taking the 7th frame. A snooker on Trendy’s final ball in the next frame looked to have gained Neill the advantage however a tremendous shot from Trendy saw him come off the side cushion and pot his last ball. With the black hanging over the middle bag the match was over and Trendy claimed his spot in the final. The second semi saw Raymond Mackenzie play Donnie Matheson . Raymond won the first two frames only to see Donnie play some fantastic pool to win three on the trot. A nice swerve shot out of a ‘total snooker’ on the black saw Mackenzie level the match at 3-3. Donnie took out a nice finish to win the 7th and put himself one frame from victory. In the next Mackenzie cleared all his balls to leave a tough black to the centre pocket which he missed allowing Donnie to play a good snooker . Mackenzie successfully hit the black only to see the white run into the middle pocket closely followed by the black to the corner. A fantastic performance and victory for Donnie and a thoroughly deserved place in the final.
I think it’s fair to say that not many people would have predicted the final line up however there is no denying that both Donnie and Trendy had played very well all day to defeat some very tough opponents over the course of the day. The final got underway with Donnie looking like a man on a mission as he quickly took the first 4 frames. At this point it would have been easy to think it was all over but Trendy showed some real determination to claw back the next 3 frames to trail 4-3. However this only seemed to spur Donnie on and he quickly took the next 2 frames to claim the victory. Hard lines to Trendy who can be very proud of his efforts and very well done on a tremendous win to Donnie who has real talent and genuinely plays the game for enjoyment , hopefully we will see him back in a tour event soon.
Anyway a big thank you to Ben, Maggie, Adam ,Laura and everyone else who helped at yesterday’s event. I would also like to thank Pinz for their support and the use of their facilities .
Finally thank you to you the players for once again supporting the tour in good numbers .
The next event is on the 22nd March, the venue will be confirmed ASAP one a few things have been finalized.
Thanks
Raymond
