Adam Wood has won Tour Event 6 to become the 2013 Moray County Champion. In an all Lossiemouth final Adam defeated Teddy Smith 6-4 to claim the title at Bowl 2000 in Elgin.
The event attracted a decent entry of 34 all of whom turned up on the day.
The games kicked off at 12pm sharp with 2 prelim matches. James ‘The Duffman ’ Duff fell at the first hurdle to the supremely confident Jamie McKnockiter who had earlier claimed he had left his entry until the last minute so as not to scare away the rest of the opposition . In the other prelim Shaun Mckay squeezed through 4-3 against Garey Steele.
The first round proper got underway with some cracking ties. Adam Wood ran out a 4-1 winner over Angie Tidball who had to console herself with some of Bowl 2000’s finest Chocolate Fudge cake. Gazza Ross came through a tight 4-3 battle with Buckie’s Richard Cormack. Tony Donovan got his 2013 tour debut off to a good start in a 4-2 win over Lhanbryde’s improving young player Josh Clark. Cammy Spence produced an excellent display to win the last two frames and seal a 4-3 win over Chris ‘Boo’ Ross. Once again Ben Royan and Stuart ‘Shouldn’t ,but just can’t help myself Grumbling’ Campbell were drawn together with ‘The Punisher’ running out a 4-2 winner. Alan ‘shaky’ Mair came through in a tight match with Keith player Neil Craig. An all Keith battle between Richard ‘Flo’ Florence and Alan Bonnyman saw ‘Bondies’ run out a 4-2 victor. Buckie’s George Taylor brought defending Champion Mark Bell’s title reign to an end by handing out an impressive 4-1 win. Alan ‘Bono’ Bonnyman had just returned from a successful International debut for Scotland’s seniors in the Home Internationals in Edinburgh and continued this success with an excellent performance to defeat Raymond Mackenzie 4-1. Ally Grant defeated his former team-mate Martin Hendry 4-1. Ian Wilson played well to defeat Jamie ‘Knoxy’ Mcknockiter . ‘Steady Teddy’ Smith defeated Martin Hawxwell 4-2. Shaun McKay, Neill Simpson and Ed Cowie all had comprehensive wins against Graeme Taylor, Bob Laughlan and Dave Hawxwell respectively. The final tie of the round between Alan Duncan and Billy Macdonald looked on paper as though it would be a tight affair , however Alan Duncan used his many, many…many years of experience to come through 4-1.
The last 16 matches saw Adam Wood and Cammy Spence win 4 frames without reply against Gary Ross and Tony Donovan. Ben Royan ground out a 4-2 victory over Ally Grant. A 7 frame thriller between Ian Wilson and Alan Bonnyman saw Bondies comeback from 3-2 down to seal a 4-3 win. Steady Teddy halted the natural potting talent of ‘Shaky’ Mair with a 4-0 victory. George Taylor defeated Alan ‘Bono’ Bonnyman 4-2 in a match played out on the tight pockets of table 1. This wasn’t a good round for the Ionic players with tour legend Neill Simpson and legend in general Alan Duncan beaten in fine style by Shaun McKay and Buckie’s Ed Cowie. Ed in particular was proving to be a bit of a Dark Horse.
The quarter finals produced two tremendous matches. Adam Wood raced into 3-0 lead against Cammy Spence only to see Cammy play some excellent pool to win the next 3 frames. In the end a tricky pot on the black by Adam sealed the win by the narrowest of margins. The match between Ben royan and Bondies was always going to be a tight affair. Bondies led 3-1 at one point only to see Ben win the next two to level at 3-3. Bondies however held his nerve to seal victory and claim his 4th semi -final spot of the year. Teddy Smith was his usual unflappable self in his 4-1 win over Shaun Mckay . Buckie pals George Taylor and Ed Cowie squared up in the remaining qurter final match with Ed winning by a comfortable 4-1 margin.
The Semi - finals saw Adam Wood and Alan Bonnyman continue their on table rivalry . Bondies won the first frame only to see Woody claim the next 4 on the trot. Frame 6 went to bondies but it was to little too late to prevent Adam from winning the next and claiming his spot in the Final. The second semi saw Ed Cowie race into a 3-1 lead over Teddy Smith. However Teddy then dug in his heels to win the next 4 in a row and progress to his second final of the year.
Onto the Final. Although he has been labelled ‘Steady Teddy’ on this report, this description does not do justice to the way Teddy Smith has progressed this year on the pool table. He quickly seized the upper hand in the final by producing some classy pool to race into a 3-0 and 4-1 lead. At this point it looked like there would only be one possible winner as the long day seemed to take its toll on Adam as he struggled to find his form. However, Adam dug deep and won the next frame, and the next , and the next to level at 4-4. From then on Adam never looked back and using all his talent and experience won the next frames to win 6-4 and claim his second tour win of the year and the titleof ‘Moray County Champion’.
Very well done to Adam on becoming the first Region 4 player to win consecutive events. Commiserations to Teddy but he should be proud of his achievements on the table this year.
The rankings will be posted later but at this moment nothing can be finalized until after the points from the Scottish Singles in Kirckaldy later this month have been added. It has to be said however that Adam Wood in in a very strong position and currently leads by a considerable margin.
All that remains for me to do now is to first of all say thank you to all 73 players who have participated in the tour this year. Thank you also to the venues where we have held our events, Bowl 2000, Commercial Hotel and the Chieftain Hotel.
Finally a big thank you to everyone who has helped with the running of these events, I am not going to mention any names incase I forget someone but you all know who you are and your assistance has been greatly appreciated.
Hopefully see you all next year.
Cheers
Raymond
