Lossiemouth’s Adam Wood has won Tour Event 5 held at the Commercial Hotel in Keith. In the Final Adam defeated Keith’s own Alan ‘Bondies’ Bonnyman 6-4 .
The event attracted a lower than average entry with only 25 players turning up on the day. There seems to be a trend of the entry levels falling as the season progresses …..this is something we will have to look at for future years.
The first round of matches got underway at 12 pm. Teddy Smith outplayed Cammy Spence with a quickfire 4-1 win. Susan Collins who had just returned from playing in the World Championships in Blackpool romped to a 4-0 victory over Dave Hawxwell. Bob Laughlan and Keith player Andy Legge found themselves involved in a tight contest with Andy eventually grinding out a 4-2 win. Stuart ‘Musn’t Grumble’ Campbell continued to re-discover his form with an impressive 4-0 win over Lhanbryde’s Shaun Mckay. Martin Hawxwell and Mark Bell were drawn together yet again with the experienced Bell winning 4-1 . Ian Wilson made a welcome comeback to the tour and had an excellent 4-3 win over James Bonnyman. Tie of the round was probably Ben McMoran against Neill Simpson. Neill needed all his experience to eventually win on the deciding frame 4-3. Adam Wood wasted little time in defeating Buckie’s Laura Duncan 4-0. Ben Royan and Martin Hendry squared up in the remaining first round clash with Ben winning by a 4-2 margin. Much to his relief James Duff avoided being drawn against someone of the female variety and like the remaining players had a ‘bye’ to the 2nd round.
The second round began with Teddy Smith against Susan Collins. Teddy began the match in fine style and played his way into a 3-0 lead with some nice clearances, however Susan never gave up and using all her experience and skill she won 3 on the trot to force the match into a decider . Susan held her nerve to win the frame and match….undoubtedly ‘Comeback of the Day !’. Stuart Campbell was unhappy that he didn’t have anything to complain about as he swept aside Andy Legge 4-0 with some excellent pool. Alan Bonnyman defeated his Whiter team-mate Mark Bell 4-1. Ian Wilson produced a fantastic performance against the tour’s most decorated player Neill Simpson with a 4-3 win. Adam Wood continued his day with a 4-0 win over Lhanbtyde laddie Josh Clark. Not for the first time this year Alan ‘Shaky’ Mair and Raymond Mackenzie squared up for an all Tennants ‘A’ battle. Mackenzie produced a good display to win 4-1 and avenge a similar win for Shaky earlier in the season. In Allan ‘Bono’ Bonnyman’s own words Ben Royan was simply ‘awsome’ in their match which Ben won 4-0. Rumour has it that it was frame 3 before Bono was given the opportunity to pot a ball. James Duff and Billy Macdonald got the final tie of the round underway . The ‘Duffman’ could do little to prevent the experienced Macdonald winning 4-1.
Onto the quarter finals and an excellent 4-1 win for Stuart Campbell over Susan Collins although the match was tighter than the score-line suggests. An all Keith battle between Alan Bonnyman and Ian Wilson saw ‘Bondies’ dish out an impressive 4-0 win. Adam Wood and Raymond Mackenzie clashed for the first time in a couple of years. Mackenzie started well and quickly went 2-0 up. In the third a good series of pots led to Raymond having a tricky black down the rail to go 3-0 up. Unfortunately for Mackenzie the pot was missed and from there on in Adam produced some fantastic pool to win 4 frames on the trot and book his place in the semi-finals. Ben Royan continued his excellent form on the day with a solid win over Billy Macdonald .
Both Semi -finals turned out to be close fought matches. On table One Stuart Campbell huffed and puffed but could not blow down Alan ‘Bondies’ Bonnymans house with the Keith man managing to keep his nose in front and seal a 5-3 win. In all seriousness it was good day’s play from Stuart Campbell who had seen his form dip in recent weeks but once again is beginning to show exactly why he has represented Scotland at international level…well done Stuart ! The second semi was an all ‘H&I’ clash between Adam Wood and Ben Royan. The first 6 frames were shared equally. ‘Woody’ managed to win the 7th to put himself ‘on the hill’ and then subsequently the next frame to book his place in the Final.
The Final between Alan Bonnyman and Adam Wood unsurprisingly turned out to be a tight affair. Bondies has been one of the most consistent players on the tour this year but he was soon to find himself 2-0 down . Bondies however rallied superbly and took the next three frames to put himself 3-2 up. However Woody was determined he was not going to be deterred and managed to find another gear which propelled him on to win the next 4 frames and seal a much deserved Tour victory. This is Adam’s second tour win his previous one coming in Tour 3 of the 2011 season where he also defeated Alan Bonnyman in the final. Very well Done to Adam and unlucky Bondies.
Thank you to the Commercial Hotel for hosting this event and allowing us to use their facilities. Thanks also to Laura Duncan for selling the football card and raising some funds for our region. Thanks to Ben for helping with the draw and Adam for helping me with the rankings and submitting everything to the SEPF. But most of all I would like to thank all of the players who continue to support the tour and enter our events, I really do appreciate it !
The final tour event is not until October ,although if a suitable date can be found we do hope to run an alternative, less formal Region 4 event before then.
Cheers
Raymond
