Lhanbryde’s Raymond Mackenzie has won Tour Event 4. In the Final Raymond beat Lossiemouth’s Ben McMoran 6-2.
The event attracted a decent entry of 36 all of whom turned up on the day. The event kicked off at 11.30 with 4 Preliminary matches. Gary Ross found the pace of a newly re-clothed table difficult against Elgin International Susan Collins who quickly romped to a 4-0 victory. Ben McMoran was struggling against a ‘mystery illness’ picked up after his Friday night out but managed to battle through in a 4-3 victory against Burghead's Richard Mackenzie. Kev McFarlane wished he had stayed on the golf course as Buckie man Richard Cormack made ‘Mincey-Meat’ of him in a 4-1 win. As a seeded player Chris ‘Boo’ Ross was unlucky to find himself drawn in the prelim against Craigellachie’s own Martin Hendry who produced a tremendous performance to pull off a 4-3 win. This was all the more impressive as Boo had won the last event and also recently reached the semi-finals of the Scottish Open, defeating several top class international players along the way.
The last 32 got underway with ‘Buckie Quines’ Laura Duncan and Caroline Duguid being defeated by Billy Macdonald and Scott Campbell respectively. Susan Collin’s day came to an end with a 4-2 defeat to Mark Bell. Jamie McKnockiter lost out by the odd frame to Martin Hawxwell. Trendy Duguid forgot his waistcoat but didn’t need it as he brought Martin Hendry crashing back to earth by dishing out an impressive 4-1 win. Cammy Spence came through in a decider against George Taylor from Buckie. Raymond Mackenzie and Alan ‘Bondies’ Bonnyman renewed their recent rivalry on the table, Mackenzie edging it with a break and dish in the deciding frame. Stuart Campbell and Ben Royan also met in this round with Royan repeating earlier success in the Elgin singles and winning 4-1. Angela Tidball sent James Duff crashing out with a 4-2 win. Lhanbryde loon Josh Clark and Richard Cormack both had impressive 4-1 wins over Bob Laughlan and former semi-finalist from Event 1 Shaun Mckay respectively. Adam Wood overturned a defeat in the previous nights flyer to defeat Andy Legge 4-1. Big shock of the round came in the defeat of Robert ‘Dobby’ Macdonald’s loss to Dave Hawxwell. Dave produced the shot of the day to come off 2 cushions and pot the black to seal a 4-2 win. Richard Florence and Teddy Smith completed the round, both winning fairly comprehensively against Nathan Garrow and Ally Grant.
Last 16 saw ‘Billy Mac’ end Scotty Campbells tournament 4-2. Mark Bell defeated the ‘Potting Machine’ that is Martin Hawxwell 4-2. No trick shots from Dave Hawxwell as the ‘Woody WoodPecker’ romped his way to a 4-0 win. An excellent performance from Angie Tidball saw her win 4-0 over Richard Cormack. Ben Royan booked Josh Clark’s seat on the bus home to Lhanbryde with a 4-0 victory. Teddy Smith came through a tough 4-2 match against Richard ‘Flo’ Florence. The two outstanding ties of the round saw Ben McMoran gradually beginning to shrug of his temporary health issues and scrape through on a deciding frame against Trendy Duguid. Cammy Spence was desperately unlucky not to defeat Raymond Mackenzie who came through in an edgy final frame decider to book his place in the quarter finals.
The quarter finals saw Mark Bell show some good from with a 4-2 win over ‘Billy Mac’. Teddy Smith defeated Harbour Inn team-mate Ben Royan 4-1 to continue his impressive season. Raymond Mackenzie defeated Angie Tidball 4-1. Outstanding match of the quarters saw Ben McMoran begin to show his true form with an exciting 4-3 victory over the ‘Pecker’ Adam Wood.
The Semi’s began with Ben McMoran who was by now ‘feeling much better’ and by all accounts did not miss much in a 5-1 victory over Mark Bell. The other semi was a much tighter affair between Teddy Smith and Raymond Mackenzie. With the match poised at 3-3 Mackenzie managed to sneak the next two frames to book his place in the final.
The final between Raymond Mackenzie and Ben ‘The Prodigy’ McMoran began with both players sharing the first 4 frames. A combination of a few uncharacteristic mistakes from Ben, some good finishes and a wee bit of luck allowed Mackenzie to win the next 4 frames on the trot and claim his first Tour victory since winning the inaugural Region 4 event in 2010.
I would like to thank Bowl 2000 for hosting the event, all the players who entered and also everyone who helped on the day but particularly Nathan Garrow who kept the whole event going whilst I was playing. Also thanks to Adam Wood for his help yesterday and with the rankings which will be available soon.
Hopefully see you at the Commercial, Keith for Tour Event 5 next month.
Cheers
Raymond
