Michael ‘Teddy’ Smith from Lossiemouth has won the second tour event of 2013 defeating Keith’s own Billy Macdonald in an exciting match at the Commercial Hotel, Keith.
The Region 4 tour rumbled into the ‘Friendly Toons’ Commercial Hotel. 49 players turned out on the day and play started promptly at 11.30am. An excellent turn-out considering the tour clashed with Rangers visit to Borough Briggs
The first round matches were largely one-sided and there were several ‘Byes’. However notable games were Ben Royan's 4-2 victory over Scotty Campbell. Recent Keith singles champ Billy Macdonald had a resounding 4-1 win over his Tennant Arms team-mate Raymond Mackenzie. Elgin’s Susan Collins and recent semi-finalist in the Ladies European championships won narrowly 4-3 over Dave Hawxwell. Dufftown man Rab Morrison won 4-2 in an epic tie with Stuart Campbell from Mosstodloch, at 3-2 down Stuart potted an excellent black only to watch in disbelief as the white travelled round the table and plopped into the middle pocket and handing the victory to Morrison. Tie and upset of the round was Martin Hawxwell's fine 4-3 win over the ‘Whiter’ stalwart and former event winner Mark Bell. The final two matches saw Buckie pair Laura Duncan and Richard ‘Mincy’ Cormack comprehensively beaten by Graham Scales and Tony McCallion respectively.
Into the second round and Andy Duncan marked his tour comeback with a thumping 4-0 win over Keith player Brian Brown. Ben Royan was never ahead in his match with Ed Cowie until he won the deciding frame to secure his place in the last 16. Father and son James and Allan Bonnyman had mixed fortunes in this round , ‘Jimik’ won by the odd frame against Jamie ‘Knoxy’ McKnockiter and ‘Bono’ lost out by the odd frame to Alan Buchan from Keith. Keeping the family theme running Kieran Wood faced his ‘Old man’ Adam Wood. Adam won through 4-1 in the end but Kieran was unlucky to experience a couple of untimely ‘bounce-outs’ at crucial times. Graham Scales and Tony McCallion squared up for what turned out to be a comprehensive 4-1 victory for McCallion.
The last 16 saw Andy Duncan pull of a surprise win over Ben Royan, Billy Macdonald continued his recent excellent form with a 4-1 win over Ben McMoran. Alan ‘Shakey’ Mair brought an end to James Bonnyman’s event with a 4-2 win, Teddy Smith won 4-2 over Susan Collins. Neill Simpson ominously defeated Rab Morrison 4-0 . Alan ‘Bondies’ Bonnyman had a tremendous 4-3 victory over Adam Wood. Martin Hendry produced a gutsy display to come back from 2-0 down to defeat Shaun McKay 4-3. Tony McCallion sent Alan Buchan back into the kitchen with knowledge of the rules proving to be crucial on occasion.
Into the quarter finals we went. The long day finally caught up with Andy Duncan who seemed out of sorts as Billy Macdonald rattled out a 4-0 win. A similar thing could be said for Alan Mairs 4-0 defeat at the hands of Alan Bonnyman. Teddy Smith continued his good form with a 4-2 win over Martin Hendry. In a repeat of the tour 1 final Neill Simpson defeated Tony McCallion 4-2 to progress to yet another semi –final.
The semi-finals both began at the same time. Teddy Smith raced into a 3-1 lead over Neill Simpson. Neill claimed the next frame only to see Teddy snatch the next two and an excellent 5-2 victory to send himself into the final. Meanwhile on the other table a much tighter game between Billy Macdonald and Alan Bonnyman was in progress. With the game finely poised at 3-3 Bondies managed to sneak into the lead only to see the vastly experienced and unflappable Billy Macdonald take the next two and book his final spot.
The final between Billy and Teddy turned out to be a close affair with both players showing respect for the others ability. However at 5-5 Teddy held his nerve to claim his first and highly deserved tour victory. So very Well done to Teddy Smith and commiserations to Billy Macdonald.
Thanks to all the players who support the tour, also thanks to the Commercial Hotel for hosting the event. A big thank you goes to Flo and Trendy for getting the tables in order. Finally thank you to all who helped prior to and on the day running the comp….too many to mention but you all know who you are.
The next Tour Event will be at the Chieftain Hotel, Inverness on
Sat April 27th.
Look forward to seeing you there.
