Elgin’s Neill Simpson has won the first SEPF Region 4 tour event of 2013. Neill Defeated Tony McCallion 6-4 in a hard fought battle which continued into the early hours of the morning at Elgin’s Bowl 2000
A total of 58 players turned out on the day which kicked off at 11.30am. Several ties went to the deciding frame in the first round, the pick of which seen Elgin’s Scotty Campbell narrowly losing out 4-3 to a new player to our region ,Ben McMoran. In another exciting tie Richard Cormack lost out by the odd frame to Burghead’s Jamie McKnockiter . Meanwhile Shaun McKay started off an impressive days play by defeating fellow Lhanbryde player Gus Clark.
Stand out tie of the second round was undoubtedly the all Ionic battle between Neill Simpson and Mike More which Simpson won on the deciding frame. Billy Macdonald and Alan ‘Bondies’ Bonnyman were pitted together in an all Keith battle, which Macdonald won 4-2. Other notable games were Ben Royan's hard fought 4-3 win over Angela Tidball and Jamie McKnockiter once again winning a deciding frame to defeat the sharp dressed man from Keith Raymond ‘Trendy’ Duguid. Elgin pool veterans Alan Duncan and Allan Bonnyman also clashed in this round with ‘Bono’ emerging as the 4-2 victor.
By now we were into the last 16 where Ben Royan produced a solid display to defeat his Harbour Inn teammate Adam Wood 4-2. Alan ‘Shaky’ Mair also faced his Tennant's teammate Billy Macdonald with Billy running out a 4-0 winner. Incredibly Jamie McKnockiter came through his 3rd deciding frame of the day, holding his nerve to defeat Teddy Smith. Garry Simmons and Tony Mcallion both came through hard fought games against Andy Legge and Allan Bonnyman respectively.
The quarter finals turned out to be one-sided affairs. Neill Simpson defeated Ben Royan 4-1, Jamie Mcknockiter finally came unstuck losing out 4-1 to Billy Macdonald, and Tony McCallion overcame Garry Simmons 4-0. Special mention has to go to Shaun McKay who had quietly fought through to meet Keith player and past event winner Chris ‘Boo’ Ross. McKay caused arguably the biggest upset of the day winning by a 4-1 margin.
In contrast to the previous round the semi Finals turned out to be tight affairs. Neill Simpson ground out a 5-4 win over Billy Macdonald. Tony McCallion finally put an end to what had been a great day for Shaun Mackay by beating him by the slimmest of 5-4 margins.
It was after midnight by the time Simpson and McCallion lagged for the break in the Final. Both players did amazingly well to fight off the fatigue that must have begun to affect their play. However Neill Simpson once again showed why he is such a formidable opponent by coming through to win 6-4. Well done Neill and hard lines to Tony.
Thank you to all the players who competed on the day.
Also thanks to Bowl 2000 and everyone who helped out on the day to keep things running as smoothly as possible. I won’t mention any names but you know who you are !
The remainder of the event dates will be online in the next few days and I will start taking names for event 2.
