Having just watched Stephen Hendry beat Martin Gould on a decider in the China Open, I must say I was disgusted by his lack of sportsmanship during the final frame.
Stephen had a chance to win but missed a tough red along the top cush leaving Martin with a red, black, red for the win. As Stephen went back to his chair he unscrewed his two piece cue quite deliberately for all to see then sat down.
Now, to me that is a concession. If my opponent had done that to me I would have claimed the game. Even though I'm not sure of the actual rules!
Anyway, Martin missed the final red he needed and Stephen cleared up to win.
Is that bad sportsmanship?

This is an easy question for me, Yes I would say it is bad sportsmanship !
Would I be right in saying that unscrewing your cue as if to say 'frame over' is a concession of frame under the rules in the SPA or Blackball in general ?.......sure I read that somewhere.
I am sure we have all witnessed similar acts of bad sportsmanship when it appears a frame of pool has been thrown away.
Never saw it but I'm surprised at Hendry.

Yes I think they do have that rule in the spa ray. They also have a loss of frame rule for picking the white out of the pocket if you foul. But that's just weird lol!

I remember a certain individual from another league i have played in who would shout and swear if he missed, unscrew his cue, bang open his case, launch his cue in, bang it shut then shout and swear some more - all while his opponent was at the table. Cringeworthy stuff. It was a shame as he was a very decent player and didn't need to cheat like that...

Was also thinking of players who make noises i.e. tapping their cues, blowing raspberries, coughing just as players are cueing through their shots. Hate to admit that I have encountered this in every league I have played in at least once. Pretty poor stuff tbh...

Funny thing is I have never noticed anyone doing this while I have been playing.......so if anyone has done this against me and I failed to finish an easy chance it is more likely down to my ineptitude rather than their bad sportsmanship .....so they have wasted their time. I have seen it many times whilst watching though and as you say its cringeworthy !

Never been put off by it and have never blamed it for a miss but I have definitely seen other players doing it to their opponents. Embarrassing.

Yes this is very bad sportsmanship. I was playing in a singles comp and my opponent started unscrewing his cue and put it away, I just said oh your conceding cheers, and shook his hand. He refused of course, not surprisingly as I had 2 balls on the cushion lol I was also baffled at the sun's comments yesterday. 'Hendry almost coming to a shock defeat' I'd have Gouldy as favourite everytime!

Certainly wouldn't be a shock these days if Gould beat Hendry in my book!

Another one which nips my tits is the old placing the cue against say a wall, or a chair, and the player standing arms folded some distance away from the cue, i.e insinuating they wont be needing it again, its much and such the same as putting your cue away.
Gamesmanship at its best!

Or when you're sharing a cue and you rub the chalk off and slacken the joint before handing it to yer mate.... Of course I've never done that.....

Yes Andrew I also hate the thrusting of the cue into the corner and the stomp to a location between 1 and 1.5 metres away. Blood boiling distaste.

Lads, wee thought here - if you feel its too draconian, or in laymans terms im talking "shite", then fire at will.
Could we put this into the constitution, or rather vote on whether its in the constitution, that any of the above results in a concession next season?
If its good enough for Blackball......
Thoughts?

I would like to see something like this in the constitution too Andrew. What do you reckon Bradders?

dont think it will work Andrew. i put my cue down do grab my pint etc u cudnt prove it wud be more hassle than its worth i think what would the rule be called? so many scenarios which could fall into the same category

I think you could do this if you have refs. Knock something up about sportsmanship that includes unscrewing cues putting the cue down as if ur finished with it etc and make sure that the refs know they can pull people up for it.
There is obviously a difference between putting ur cue down gently and having a wee sip of your pint compared to launching ur bat in the corner, stalking off and sulkily downing your drink. I think we all know the difference and it would be easy to spot in my view.

Think it was cause more hassle than its worth. If your opponent wants to huff like a child then let him. Embarrassing himself is punishment enough

So by your logic we should not challenge poor sportsmanship because it is too much hassle. Oh well case closed then...

Adam, ask Trendy about the Frenchman who attempted to snap his cue in half (twice) during a frame against us in Dublin. Result = One perfectly good cue and one very sore thigh.
They then tried to sub him out of deciding frame but as last session had started I refused to allow it. He cleared up his colours and went in off while potting black... Waistcoat and bow tie flew across the hall, cue launched into corner, he refused to shake hands until his Captain made him and he sat down and cried for a good while...
Great fun!

Well yes kind of Adam. Who would accept a loss of frame? Even if they did, if they are putting their cue away then presumably you have tap ins anyway! Just think its something that doesn't happen often enough, and isn't serious enough that we shud be focusing on it

Lol! Yes it looked like a push but be wasn't left with much even if a foul had been called. Hardly a game changer!
What made me laugh most was that he chose to take a swipe at Chinese players in general. Along the lines of 'they are all cheats'! This, after his tweets about china smelling of dead cats during the recent World Open. The guys nuts!

The guy just wants to get into the papers. Still horrible from ching cong not admitting it but I'd also blame the ref.
