What is the correct protocol for a player who requires rules clarification during a frame of a match? Ask their captain/opposition captain/opponent?
Clarification please oracle!!

Im not sure if theres anything set in stone Adam.....whenever theres been an issue with any of our games we've simply stopped the clock and both captains discussed? Not sure whether thats right or wrong.
TBH i haven't really been in a situation where theres been a stand off in a while, but whilst practicing with benny last night a new one cropped up. Basically i went to break but miscued....barely touched the pack, only two balls hit the cushion, plus i went in off.
So.....as it is a foul break.....could Ben then take the two shots without re-racking the balls as per? Or would he have to re-rack the balls and take his two visits from there? Obviously as i had potted the white he would have to take them from baulk.

I have always thought that a player could ask his captain for clarification. However the captain has to be careful that he doesn't advise the player in any way.
I seem to remember reading somewhere that if there is a referee the player can ask him/her for clarification but the referee has to use a 'past, present and future' mindset . ie they cannot comment on what will happen if a certain shot is played but they can read out the rule which applies to the present situation.
Probably not much help............but then again I'm no Oracle !.

If its a straight question regarding a rule with a straight answer only regarding the rule then you should ask your captain. '' Its a foul snooker so can I play a free ball?'' ''Yes you can'' is an acceptable answer ''Yes and you have to nominate what ball you want to hit'' is not ! In my eyes anyway. To be sure I think it would maybe make sense to maybe ask the oponents captian?

The player asked me (as their captain) if they could play their nominated free ball onto their own colour and keep their two shots. I agreed they could and it was suggested afterward that this wasn't acceptable and that players shouldn't ask anyone anything during frames unless its doubles.

they should ask the player there playing against, then if still not sure, bring both captains together and then ask the question again

I've always said ask the opponents if they are OK with you checking rules and direct the question towards both captains. Would be a whole lot easier if we had refs! Also like Tony said, a yes or no answer is usually fine (-'d be happy with your answer) but unsolicited advice isn't.

There is nothing wrong with anything adam or his team mate done. Is this a legal shot captain? Yes it is. Simples. Where's the issue?
