You can play as many as you like in a row!

Aye Stu, as many as you like. The rule people get confused with regarding three in a row is Rule Y whereby if three shots have elapsed and no object ball has been hit, the ref can order the frame to be restarted. Object balls being any colour including black.
RULE Y: Stalemate
The referee shall declare a Stalemate if both the player and the opponent have three turns in succession where the Cue Ball fails to make contact with an Object Ball. In such a case, the frame will be replayed with the same player breaking.
Other 'standard' deliberate fouls are completely unlimited in number.

The up to date rules are available here as a download: www.wepf.org/playrules.php?option=1They are the same as the one I posted above as a poster. I amended the bits at the top of the document for Keith, the same can be done for the EDPL...

I think the deliberate foul rule should be looked at in the context where one player's final ball lies over a pocket and the other player's balls are blocked by this. Ultimately the player who's ball lies over the pocket keeps playing a deliberate foul until he gets himself in a position where he receives a foul snooker usually when both players have one ball each left and ends up winning the frame. Does this perhaps constitute unsporting play??

I will say it's a frustrating scenario ! I suppose the best solution is not to get yourself into that position in the first place - which could be classed as a skill in itself ! I would also point out that each time your opponent deliberately pots one of your balls leading up to this situation you have 2 shots in which to try and develop your ball. I personally like the deliberate foul rule which remember anyone can play ! But I am aware for example that some of the ....erm 'stalwarts' who play for one of our Tennants teams don't like it and as you say think its unsporting - but they never attempt to play it themselves and they should If you can't beat them join them !!

Yeah, as Ray says, pre-empt the situation and clear the pocket earlier!
Then again, I'm yet to see a position that you can't play out of! When I was new to the rules I thought the situation you described meant the player with the ball in the jaws had pretty much won but now know different. There's always a way out, you've just got to think a bit more and learn from watching the top players at the big comps or on TV. Sometimes it's a case of hit & hope with your first shot, other times it's a case of knocking the black somewhere which prevents them clearing up even with the foul snooker etc...

Ray and Brad I thought somebody might reply along the lines of what you guys have and I can't argue with what you say. Frustrating at times though! Cheers Brian

Sorry couldn't be more helpful!
The rules certainly have their downfalls at times, a free ball would sort it all out but unfortunatley it's one of the things missing in an otherwise very good set of rules!

Yeah Raymond is spot on you need to prevent that situation from happening. Free ball etc would be good but you can't have free balls / combinations etc along with the df just wouldn't work. If players are still not too sure about some rules I'd reccommend getting them down to the tour when it kicks off again. A few matches against players that know them well and having the oppertunity to watch a day of pool will help a lot!

Couldn't have said it better myself Tony, playing on the tour and at national tournaments has improved players' (like myself and many others) tactical games ten-fold.
